Rooted: A Beginner’s Bonsai Workshop

About the class

In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll choose a juniper and begin developing it into your own bonsai. We’ll explore how to find the tree’s best viewing angle, select branches, establish an overall design and use bonsai wire to gently guide its future growth. You’ll learn basic pruning, proper wiring techniques, wire-gauge selection, pot considerations and—most importantly—how to care for your tree after the workshop. We’ll cover watering, sunlight, outdoor dormancy, seasonal maintenance and how to continue shaping your bonsai over time. All trees, wire and workshop materials are included. No previous experience is necessary—just patience, curiosity and a willingness to begin building a relationship with something living.
